babybug's fever last week was due to roseola. i don't know where she caught that bug. probably at the sitter's house. (yes, a sitter...that's another story) monday we took her to the doctor and she got her blood drawn and a urine test from that horrible lab tech. anyway, tuesday the rash started to break out. she also started complaining off and on about stomach pains. by wednesday her regular pediatrician was out of town so i had to call his substitute. i told dr. substitute that babybug keels over in the fetal position and complains of pain. she described it as a "burning". dr. substitute kind of laughed at babybug's description. i'm thinking, hey, she's two! the substitute should know "burning" isn't a positive adjective. she told me to do blah, blah, blah which i essentially felt was NOTHING. she said i should take her to the emergency if she starts screaming bloody murder. all wednesday night she tossed and turned, waking up every twenty to thirty minutes. by four a.m. she was crying of pain. at seven a.m. husband said we should make a doctor's appointment. i was uncomfortable with going to substitute because i felt it would be a waste of time. i really wanted to take her to emergency but she wasn't "screaming bloody murder". i decided to call my cousin who's a pediatric emergency doctor in the er. she said to bring her in immediately. my cousin was such a sweetie and waited even though her all-nighter shift was over. she stayed during all of the tests and procedures. we found out after the x-rays and ultra-sound, her suspicion was correct. babybug had intussusception. the funny thing is that husband also had it as a baby. his case was further along since they actually had to cut part of his intestine off and reattach. i know, that is just UGH! my first thought was that it's hereditary but my cousin said it's not. next, they gave her the barium enema to try and push it back out. they.did.NOT.sedate.her. husband helped hold babybug down while four others and the specialist did their work. i stood by the door listening to babybug scream and cry. ohhh, i tell you, the stress, anxiety and tears. the doctors kept her overnight for observation and to give her an iv since she was dehydrated. they let us leave as long as she only eats bland food. i couldn't wait to leave. all we've been eating at home is graham crackers and udon.
monday we are going to have a follow-up with her regular pediatrician. fyi, keep in mind the symptoms. apparently it's not as rare as information states. the nurse said that babybug and another child were admitted on the same day for intussusception. earlier in the week they also had another baby with it. my cousin said in the emergency room she sees about one case a month.
